How to Reduce Offerwall Chargebacks and Reversals: A Publisher's Guide

How to Reduce Offerwall Chargebacks and Reversals: A Publisher's Guide

A chargeback (also called a reversal) happens when an advertiser rejects a conversion after it was reported as complete. The network deducts the payout from the publisher — but by then the publisher has often already rewarded the member. On reward sites with thin margins, reversal rates of 10% to 20% can wipe out profit. This guide explains why conversions get reversed and the controls that bring the rate down.

Why advertisers reverse conversions

ReasonWhat the advertiser saw
VPN, proxy or datacenter IPThe user's IP does not match the targeted country or is a known anonymizer.
Duplicate userSame device, email, payment account or fingerprint as an earlier conversion.
Fake or low-quality leadInvalid email, random form data, disposable domains.
Early uninstall or no engagementApp removed within days; the user never returned after the rewarded event.
Cancelled trial or refunded purchaseThe paid action was undone within the cancellation window.
Emulators and automationDevice signals show an emulator, rooted device or scripted behaviour.
Existing customerThe offer was for new users only.

1. Block VPN, proxy and datacenter traffic

Country mismatch is the single biggest reversal cause on reward sites. Check the member's IP against a VPN/proxy database at login and before opening the offerwall, and show offers only for the member's real country. Users who switch countries often should be flagged, not instantly banned — genuine travellers exist — but their rewards can be held longer.

2. One account per device and per payout address

Multi-accounting produces duplicates that advertisers reject in bulk. Enforce one account per device fingerprint, link accounts that share a PayPal or crypto address, block disposable emails and require phone or email verification before the first cashout. Review clusters of accounts created from the same IP range within minutes of each other.

3. Hold rewards before cashout

You cannot stop every reversal, so make sure you can recover the money. Keep a pending period (24 to 72 hours for installs, up to 30 days for CPA offers with cancellation windows) before rewards become withdrawable. Show members both a pending and an available balance so the delay is transparent.

4. Deduct reversals automatically

Handle reversal postbacks exactly like conversions: match the transaction ID, deduct the amount from the member's balance (allowing a negative balance if needed) and record the reason. Members with repeated reversals should lose access to CPA offers first and to the wall entirely if it continues.

5. Set expectations in the offer description

Many reversals are honest mistakes: the member was an existing customer, used a different email, or uninstalled too early. Clear requirements ("new users only", "keep the app installed for 7 days", "complete the survey fully") reduce them. The best practices guide covers reward design and messaging.

6. Use the network's data

A good offerwall network reports conversions and reversals per member, offer and country, and already filters known fraud before paying. On AdswedMedia publishers see conversion and chargeback details in reports and receive reversal postbacks so balances stay in sync. Compare your reversal rate per offer type: if one advertiser reverses far above average, hide the offer instead of absorbing the loss.

What a healthy reversal rate looks like

  • Installs and CPE: low single digits.
  • Surveys: moderate; screen-outs are not reversals, but low-quality answers are.
  • CPA trials and deposits: the highest, because cancellation windows are long.

Track the rate monthly per offer type and per traffic source. If you are above these ranges, start with VPN blocking and the pending period — those two controls fix most of it. Read next: offerwall fraud prevention and how S2S postbacks work.

Frequently asked questions

What is an offerwall chargeback?

A chargeback or reversal is a conversion the advertiser rejects after it was reported. The network deducts the payout from the publisher, so the publisher must also deduct the reward from the member to avoid a loss.

Who pays for a reversed conversion?

The advertiser does not pay, the network deducts it from the publisher, and the publisher should deduct it from the member. A pending period before cashout makes that deduction possible.

How long should I hold rewards before cashout?

A common setup is 24 to 72 hours for installs and engagement offers and up to 30 days for CPA offers with cancellation windows. Show a pending balance so members understand the delay.

Can a reversal happen weeks later?

Yes, especially for trials, subscriptions and deposits that can be cancelled or refunded. That is why high-payout CPA rewards should have a longer pending period than installs.
